Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection by: Fr. Alberto Bueno, T.O.R.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

This week, the third Sunday in ordinary time, finds us also celebrating the octave of prayer for Christian unity. As Jonah called the people of Nineveh to conversion, and Jesus called the first disciples to follow him and fish people for the Kingdom, we too are called to give witness to the Gospel. Jesus prayed at the Last Supper that all His followers be one. Let us join our Lord in praying for an end to the divisions among Christians, as well as the divisions that have divided people and nations. In this light I share with you a prayer written by Pope Francis.

O God, Trinity of love,
from the profound communion of your divine life,
pour out upon us a torrent of fraternal love.
Grant us the love reflected in the actions of Jesus,
in his family of Nazareth,
and in the early Christian community.

Grant that we Christians may live the Gospel,
discovering Christ in each human being,
recognizing him crucified
in the sufferings of the abandoned
and forgotten of our world,
and risen in each brother or sister
who makes a new start.

Come, Holy Spirit, show us your beauty,
reflected in all the peoples of the earth,
so that we may discover anew
that all are important and all are necessary,
different faces of the one humanity
that God so loves. Amen.

Papa Francisco

PRESENTATION OF THE LORD – On Tuesday, February 2nd, we celebrate the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This celebration has had several names: Candlemas, the Purification of Mary, and the Presentation of Jesus. “Candlemas” is a northern European name for the festival because there had long been a procession with lighted candles at the mass on this day, reflecting Simeon’s proclamation of “a light for revelation to the Gentiles”, which, in turn, echoes Isaiah 49:6 in the second of the “servant of the Lord” oracles. All candles which will be used in church for the coming year are blessed on this day at Mass, so we are inviting all parishioners to bring their baptismal candle or another candle from home and we will bless them at the Mass.

Wednesday, Feb. 3rd is the Memorial of St. Blaise, and we will offer a general Blessing of Throats at the end of the 8:30 AM Mass that morning.
