My sisters and brothers in Christ,
Seven hundred years before Christ, the Assyrians destroyed Galilee and took most of the citizens, the ones they did not kill, and moved them far away from their homes in Galilee. Many pagans were moved into Galilee. By the times Jesus comes on the scene, there were still a lot of pagans living in Galilee. The prophet Isaiah was living in Jerusalem at the time, but he saw good things for Galilee. The prophet Isaiah said, “the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” Jesus was the fulfillment of this prophecy. Jesus chose to begin His ministry in Galilee where He spent most of His life. Jesus was the light that the people of Galilee, the people living in darkness, had longed for. On the day of Baptism our parents and Godparents received a light for us and they heard the words, “Receive the light of Christ and keep that light burning brightly.” We are here today because that light has kept burning in each of us. May we always be the light in the world even when there are difficulties and challenges.
Setecientos años antes de Cristo, los asirios destruyeron a Galilea y se llevaron a la mayoría de sus ciudadanos, los que no mataron, se los llevaron lejos de sus hogares fuera de Galilea. Entonces, muchos paganos fueron trasladados a Galilea. Al tiempo que Jesús aparece en la escena, todavía quedaban muchos paganos viviendo en Galilea. En aquel tiempo, el profeta Isaías estaba viviendo en Jerusalem, pero vio buenas cosas para Galilea. El profeta Isaías dijo, “la gente que caminó en las tinieblas ha podido ver una gran luz.” Jesús fue el cumplimiento de esta profecía. Jesús escogió comenzar Su ministerio en Galilea donde pasó la mayor parte de Su vida. Jesús fue la luz que el pueblo de Galilea, el pueblo viviendo en las tinieblas, había deseado por mucho tiempo. En el día del Bautismo, nuestros padres y madres, padrinos y madrinas, recibieron la luz por nosotros y escucharon las palabras, “Recibe la luz de Cristo y mantén esa luz ardiendo intensamente”. Hoy estamos aquí porque esa luz ha seguido ardiendo en cada uno de nosotros. Que siempre seamos la luz en el mundo aun cuando hay dificultades y retos.
