My dear sisters and brothers, all our Scripture passages this weekend remind us that God’s plan, from the beginning of salvation history, has been a universal one. The prophet Isaiah tells us that the Lord is open to the Gentiles, not just to the Jewish people. “Foreigners will join themselves to the Lord … for my house shall be called a house of prayer for ALL peoples.” Centuries later, in his letter to the Romans, Saint Paul calls himself the apostle to the Gentiles. Throughout his various missionary journeys, as we read in the Acts of the Apostles and in his letters, Paul brought the message of hope and mercy rooted in Christ’s Paschal Mystery to any who would receive it, and the community of believers, the Church, grew to reflect this reality. The Church, from its very early days was, and is, a kaleidoscope of peoples of every race, culture, language and social status, truly catholic (that is universal) united in one God, one faith, one baptism in Christ Jesus our Lord. Even Jesus gives witness to that in our Gospel today when he recognizes that faith in him can be present even in a Canaanite woman! Christ’s great commission was to make believers of all nations. That mission belongs to all of us. There are no barriers or exclusions to come into the Catholic Church. There must be no divisions among Catholics for we are One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic; in Christ we are all one family, a human family transformed by faith, hope and love. Now and always and forever!
Queridos hermanos y hermanas: todos los pasajes de las Escrituras de este fin de semana nos recuerdan que el plan de Dios, desde el comienzo de la historia de la salvación, ha sido universal. El profeta Isaías nos dice que el Señor está abierto a los gentiles, no solo al pueblo judío. “Extranjeros se han adherido al Señor … porque mi templo será la casa de oración para TODOS los pueblos.” Siglos más tarde, en su carta a los Romanos, san Pablo se llama a sí mismo el apóstol de los gentiles. A lo largo de sus diversos viajes misioneros, tal como leemos en los Hechos de los Apóstoles y en sus cartas, Pablo llevó el mensaje de esperanza y misericordia —arraigado en el Misterio Pascual de Cristo— a cuantos quisieron recibirlo, y la comunidad de los creyentes, la Iglesia, creció hasta reflejar esta realidad. La Iglesia, desde sus mismos inicios, fue y es un caleidoscopio de pueblos de toda raza, cultura, lengua y condición social —verdaderamente católica (es decir, universal)—, unidos en un solo Dios, una sola fe y un solo bautismo en Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor. ¡Incluso Jesús da testimonio de ello en el Evangelio de hoy, al reconocer que la fe en Él puede estar presente incluso en una mujer cananea! La Gran Comisión de Cristo fue hacer creyentes de todas las naciones. Esa misión nos pertenece a todos. No hay barreras ni exclusiones para ingresar a la Iglesia Católica. No debe haber divisiones entre los católicos, pues somos una Iglesia, santa, católica y apostólica; en Cristo, todos somos una sola familia, una familia humana transformada por la fe, la esperanza y el amor. ¡Ahora, siempre y para siempre!
