My dear Sisters and Brothers, Happy feast of Pentecost! The great scholar of the early church Eusebius of Caesarea called Pentecost the “omnium festivitatum maximum”, that is, “the greatest of feasts”. In more recent times, Pope Saint Paul VI called it “the source of all other feasts.” Why this emphasis? When we celebrate someone’s birthday, we don’t just celebrate the day they were born so many years ago; we celebrate the life they have lived, the person they are to us now. Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church. This is not simply a day we remember something that happened in Jerusalem many centuries ago. In that moment of wind and fire, the Church was born and sent into the world; it has carried on and carried out its mission, with many ups and downs, right up to our own day, and, therefore, today we celebrate all of that. In the outpouring of the Holy Spirit all believers are called and sent, just like the apostles and the other members of the early Church, to be the presence of the kingdom of God in the midst of the world. Each of us has been given various gifts by the Spirit, for some purpose in the common purpose of the Church, that is, to be God’s kingdom community as salt and light for the world. Whatever gifts and talents have been given to each of us, they are meant to be used as building blocks of this new creation in Christ. On this Pentecost day we celebrate who we have been, who we are now, and commit ourselves to become a fuller presence of the People of God, the Church. That is our challenge and our call. May the Spirit of God inspire and guide you to be a living sign of Christ in the world.
Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas: ¡Feliz fiesta de Pentecostés! El gran erudito de la Iglesia primitiva, Eusebio de Cesarea, llamó a Pentecostés el «omnium festivitatum maximum», es decir, «la mayor de las fiestas». En tiempos más recientes, el Papa san Pablo VI la llamó «la fuente de todas las demás fiestas». ¿Por qué este énfasis? Cuando celebramos el cumpleaños de alguien, no solo celebramos el día en que nació hace tantos años, sino la vida que ha vivido y la persona que es para nosotros ahora. A menudo se llama a Pentecostés el cumpleaños de la Iglesia. No es simplemente un día en el que recordamos algo que sucedió en Jerusalén hace muchos siglos. En aquel momento de viento y fuego, la Iglesia nació y fue enviada al mundo; ha proseguido y llevado a cabo su misión —con muchos altibajos— hasta llegar a nuestros días y, por eso, hoy celebramos todo ello. En el derramamiento del Espíritu Santo, todos los creyentes son llamados y enviados —al igual que los apóstoles y los demás miembros de la Iglesia primitiva— a ser la presencia del Reino de Dios en medio del mundo. A cada uno de nosotros el Espíritu nos ha otorgado diversos dones, con algún propósito dentro del propósito común de la Iglesia: ser la comunidad del reino de Dios, como sal y luz para el mundo. Cualesquiera que sean los dones y talentos que se nos han otorgado a cada uno de nosotros, están destinados a ser utilizados como bloques de construcción de esta nueva creación en Cristo. En este día de Pentecostés, celebramos quiénes hemos sido y quiénes somos ahora, y nos comprometemos a convertirnos en una presencia más plena del Pueblo de Dios: la Iglesia. Ese es nuestro desafío y nuestro llamado. Que el Espíritu de Dios los inspire y los guíe a ser un signo vivo de Cristo en el mundo.
