The Fourth Sunday of Easter, my dear sisters and brothers, is called “Good Shepherd Sunday”. This is because the Gospel proclaimed on this Sunday is always one which presents the Lord as the Good Shepherd. This year, this Sunday is also Mothers’ Day and as I was reflecting on this, it struck me that a shepherd, in many ways, is like a mother to his or her sheep, and in a special way to the lambs. Christ, as our Good Shepherd, cares for us and tends to us, mothering us wholeheartedly. The earliest painted images of Christ portray him as a young shepherd carrying a lamb in his arms; the Lord holds us, always, in just this way! This brings to mind the words of the Prophet Isaiah, “Can a (mother) forget… her child? Even (if she) may forget, … I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 49:15). We are never forgotten; we are never left orphans! Our Good Shepherd is always, always, pastoring us (Psalm 23). But it does not end there, as He pastors us, He also sends us: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (John 20:21). Saint Francis, in the earlier version of his Letter to the Faithful, writes: “We are mothers when we carry Him in our heart and body through a divine love and a pure and sincere conscience and give birth to Him through a holy activity which must shine as an example before others.” We are called to tend and care for each other as a loving mother cares for her children; shepherding and guiding along the path of the Gospel. And, lest we forget, on this month of May, when we honor the Mother of the Lord, given to us as our own, like her Son she gives us an example to follow. To Mary, Mother of God, we sing: “Blessed are you among women, blest in turn all women, too. Blessed they with peaceful spirits. Blessed they with gentle hearts.” (cf. May God bless all our mothers, living and deceased, and may all those who have mothered us throughout our lives be blessed by the Good Shepherd, who loved His own Mother so much that He shared her with all of us to love as well!
El cuarto domingo de Pascua, mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, se llama «Domingo del Buen Pastor». Esto se debe a que el Evangelio que se proclama en este domingo siempre presenta al Señor como el Buen Pastor. Este año, este domingo también es el día de la Madres, y, reflexionando sobre esto, se me ocurrió que un pastor, en muchas maneras, es igual que una madre para sus ovejas, y de una manera especial para los corderos. Cristo, como nuestro Buen Pastor, nos cuida y nos atiende, amantándonos con todo el corazón. Las primeras imágenes pintadas de Cristo lo representan como un joven pastor que lleva un cordero en sus brazos; ¡el Señor nos sostiene siempre de esta manera! Esto trae a la mente las palabras del profeta Isaías, “¿Puede una (madre) olvidarse de su (hijo)? Pues bien, aunque alguna lo olvidase, yo nunca me olvidaría de ti.” (Isaías 49,15). Nunca nos olvida; ¡nunca nos deja huérfanos! Nuestro Buen Pastor siempre, siempre nos pastorea (Salmo 22/23). Pero no acaba ahí, Él, que nos pastorea, también nos envía: “Como el Padre me envió, así también yo los envío.” (Juan 20,21). San Francisco, en la primera redacción de su carta a los fieles, escribe: “Somos sus madres, cuando lo llevamos en el corazón y en nuestro cuerpo por el amor divino y por una conciencia pura y sincera, y lo damos a luz por las obras santas, que deben ser luz para los demás por el ejemplo.” Estamos llamados a cuidarnos y atendernos unos a otros como una madre amorosa cuida a sus hijos, pastoreando y guiando por el camino del Evangelio. Y, para que no lo olvidemos, en este mes de mayo, cuando honramos a la Madre del Señor, que nos fue dada como nuestra, como su Hijo, ella nos da un ejemplo a seguir. A María, la Madre de Dios, cantamos: “Bendita eres entre las mujeres, bendita igual, todas las mujeres. Benditas ellas con espíritus pacíficos. Benditas ellas con corazones gentiles.” (cf. ¡Que Dios bendiga a todas nuestras madres, vivas y fallecidas, y que todas aquellas que nos han amamantado a lo largo de nuestras vidas sean bendecidas por el Buen Pastor, que amó tanto a Su propia Madre que la compartió con todos nosotros para amarla también!
