Reflection by Fr. Salvator M. Stefula, T.O.R.

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

There are two chapters in the book of Leviticus that speaks about leprosy. There were many skin diseases in those days and all of them were said to be leprosy. Many diseases of the skin were contagious and those with such a disease had to be isolated from the community. They had to live outside the community, away from friends, family and their occupation.
There were two important things that happened when Jesus cured the lepers. Their physical disease was cured and they were restored back to the community and now were able to live with them again.

Many of us remember when the Sacrament of the Sick was called Extreme Unction or Last Rites. It was the Second Vatican Council that restored this sacrament to its original purpose: a prayer and sacrament for healing. Healing was part of Jesus’ mission and also of the disciples. It is important that we see the value of this sacrament especially when we are seriously ill or preparing for surgery. It’s the grace of this sacrament that gives the spiritual strength needed during times of illness and if the Lord wills, physical healing can be present. We encourage you to ask for this sacrament if you are preparing for surgery.
